FAQsWhy do you focus your efforts outside of the U.S.? Since most children in the U.S. will receive adequate medical care for this disease, Gift of Life - Los Angeles focuses its efforts around the world, where identified children face certain mortality without surgical intervention. Leading U.S. hospitals have confirmed that if a parent, who has no medical insurance and not the adequate financial resources, was to enter their medical facility with a child in need of life-saving surgery, they would not turn them away. Every attempt would be made to save the child's life. In most developing countries, this care is not available. Why did you choose El Salvador as your country of focus? In 2007, Salvadorian child, Josselyn Hidalgo, touched our hearts. Josselyn was the first child from El Salvador that Gift of Life - Los Angeles sponsored. Josselyn was flown to the United States for the first of multiple corrective heart surgeries in 2007. During the course of their stay in the U.S. we grew to love them and at the same time, Josselyn's mother advocated for the many children of El Salvador in need of these life-saving procedures. How long will you continue to work in El Salvador? Our goal is to develop a sustainable pediatric cardiac program by the year 2015 in El Salvador. This includes providing training to local medical professionals, equipment and medical supplies to local hospitals, and the establishment of a pediatric cardiac surgical center. What does it cost to save a child's life? $5000 - $10,000 for an open-heart procedure How can I help? In addition to financial contributions, we are always in need of volunteers to help with fundraising events and general office duties. You can also volunteer to be a host family for a child and their parent during their stay in the Los Angeles area to receive their gift of life. We will also gladly accept contributions of services to help further our programs. During preparations for fundraising events, auction items are always appreciated. How can I donate?
